When we started this company we thought it we would be a traveling company, going from storefront to storefront helping to revitalize long-empty spaces, always seeing new places and giving a mini-boost to the area foot traffic.
In reality, finding spaces large enough to accommodate both actors and audience as well as landlords willing to let us stay for just three months took a lot of time and effort, not to mention getting event permits from the city and all of the paperwork and man-hours that took.
We quickly starting longing for a permanent space. Yes, it will take a little more time and probably a lot more paperwork to move into a permanent space, but then we'll be set and we'll be able to focus on producing shows!
Here is a list of some of the great things about being in one set location:
we'll have a space for our shows
we'll have a space for rehearsals
our designers will know during the planing stages what kind of space they're going to be working with
actors and regular audience members will have an easy time finding it
we'll be able to have guest directors
we'll be able to have guest troupes and guest shows
we'll be able to build set pieces
we'll be able to paint the space to suit each show
we'll be able to do cross-promotional stuff with neighboring stores
no more searching for spaces
the ability to have a set season and do three big shows a year
a space to do staged readings
a space for art exhibits
a space for independent film screenings
auditions in the same location as rehearsals and performances
I'm sure there are more I'll think of later. Do you have anything to add to this list?
