Donald O'Connor is so amazing in this movie, for me he always steals the show. I've never understood why Debbie Reynolds' character (Kathy Selden) falls for Gene Kelly's character (Don Lockwood) instead of Donald O'Connor as Cosmo Brown. Don't get me wrong - Gene Kelly is dreamy and he can dance, but Donald O'Connor is so funny!
I know some people think that one should approach Shakespeare seriously, but as you might guess, I disagree. Shakespeare plays are full of comidic bits (even in the tragedies - that man understood comedic relief) and his plays are absolutely riddled with naughty references. Shakespeare's comedies are so light-hearted and playful, staging them as serious literature would take all of the fun out of them. As Cosmo Brown would say, "Make them laugh!"
